(01)What it is
Carriers send the 214 to report where a shipment is: picked up, arrived at a terminal, out for delivery, delivered, or delayed with a reason. Shippers use it to track freight and to tell customers when goods will arrive.
It is common for truckload and less-than-truckload (LTL) freight, where tracking numbers alone don’t give customers enough detail.
Each event uses a standard status code, so a shipper can tell a delivery appointment from an actual delivery, and a weather delay from a missed pickup, without reading free-text notes.
(02)What it carries
- 01The shipment reference, such as the bill of lading or PRO number
- 02A status code and the date, time and location of the event
- 03Reasons for delays or exceptions
- 04Appointment and delivery details
In plain language. Each trading partner’s implementation guide sets the exact fields it requires.
(03)Where it fits
Documents usually exchanged before and after the 214.
(04)In NetSuite
Attach 214 statuses to the NetSuite item fulfillment, usually in custom fields or a custom record, so customer service can see delivery status and a portal can show it to customers. Delivered status can also trigger invoicing when terms require proof of delivery.
(05)Common mistakes
- 01Storing only the latest status, losing the history needed to dispute late deliveries.
- 02Matching 214s to fulfillments by a reference the carrier doesn’t always send.
